Salford Council puts local heritage first
Wednesday 26 September 2007
News that Salford Council has refused an application to demolish a Victorian hotel on Bury New Road has been welcomed by the Victorian Society, the national charity campaigning for quality architecture built between 1837 and 1914.
The Society was contacted by local residents concerned about plans to pull down the distinctive, locally-listed Hazeldene Hotel, one of the last remaining Victorian buildings on this stretch of the road. Now Salford Council has thrown out the scheme to replace the 140 year-old building with a block of 18 apartments.
‘It’s great to see Salford Council standing up for the buildings that people value,’ said Alex Baldwin, Conservation Adviser for the Victorian Society. ‘Hazeldene Hotel is an attractive, locally significant building, which contributes a lot to the character of the area. It’s still a working hotel and we have seen no evidence to suggest that it can’t either continue as such or be converted for residential use. We hope this is the last we hear of plans to knock it down.’
