Concern for Neath's Historic Theatre

Wednesday 24 October 2007

The Victorian Society, the national charity campaigning for the Victorian and Edwardian historic environment in England and Wales, has welcomed Neath Port Talbot Council's rapid response after the Grade II-listed Gwyn Hall was seriously damaged in a blaze last week.

Built in 1887 by John Norton, the Gothic theatre has served the local community for generations and is said to have launched the careers of Welsh stars such as Katherine Jenkins and Hollywood actor Ray Milland. It was undergoing a £4million restoration when a devastating fire started last Thursday evening. Early indications are that the gable ends of the building may have to be demolished; yet there are hopes that parts of the building, including its distinctive façade, can be preserved and that the theatre could be rebuilt.

‘The fire was a terrible blow for everyone who had worked so hard to secure the future of Gwyn Hall,’ said Heloise Brown, Conservation Adviser of the Victorian Society. ‘The theatre is a significant and much-loved building which has played a key role in the history of Glamorgan for 120 years. We welcome the quick action of the Council to assess the damage and urge councillors to do everything possible to ensure that this important landmark is saved.’
