Frith Cottage saved from the wrecking ball
Thursday 1 November 2007
News that Three Rivers District Council has thrown out plans to demolish part of a Victorian cottage on Sandy Lane in Northwood has been welcomed by the Victorian Society, the national charity campaigning for the Victorian and Edwardian historic environment.
The Society was contacted by local residents who were concerned that plans to convert the 1860 timbered cottage, which is locally listed and stands in a Conservation Area, into an annexe to a much larger house would damage its character. Joining with them, the Victorian Society urged the Council to refuse permission for the alterations to the cottage, which is one of the few remaining buildings that were part of the Eastbury Farm Estate.
‘We’re delighted that Three Rivers Council has blocked this scheme,’ said Heloise Brown, Conservation Adviser of the Victorian Society. ‘Buildings like Frith Cottage are physical records of the history of Northwood. They contribute a lot to the character of the area and people value them.’
She continued: ‘As part of a Conservation Area, Sandy Lane has been identified as an area of special architectural and historical interest. The plans for Frith Cottage would have been damaging to it. We congratulate the Council for putting heritage first.’
