Battle continues for Pentonville Road

Friday 16 November

New plans to demolish the locally listed Victorian tenement buildings on Pentonville Road have been criticized by the Victorian Society, the national charity campaigning for the Victorian and Edwardian historic environment.

Anxious that the loss of the tenement blocks at 233-243 Pentonville Road would damage the character of the Kings Cross Conservation Area and affect the setting of the Grade II-listed Welsh Chapel next door, the Victorian Society has opposed the scheme. They are urging the Islington Borough Council to throw out plans to replace the buildings with an eleven storey block, which shows no regard for the architectural style of the area and would obliterate views of the Welsh Chapel.

‘We urge the Council to reject this scheme,’ said Heloise Brown, Conservation Adviser of the Victorian Society. ‘The intended replacement buildings show no regard for the historic character of the Kings Cross area and would obliterate many views of the listed chapel.’

She continued: ‘Local listing marks out buildings that make a positive contribution to their surroundings. The buildings on Pentonville Road are attractive assets to the area and reflect the largely nineteenth century architecture that dominates in Kings Cross. It would be a great shame to see them go.’
