Fulham's Gothic Castle Club seeks sympathetic new owner
21 November 2007
News that Hammersmith and Fulham Council has put the nineteenth century Castle Club on Broomhouse Lane up for sale has been welcomed by the Victorian Society, the national charity campaigning for the Victorian and Edwardian historic environment.
Built in 1855 by Horace Francis, who, with his brother Frederick, worked on projects such as Christ Church, Lancaster Gate and the Hotel Metropole on Northumberland Avenue, the Castle Club is a highly decorative building on a prominent corner site. Grade II-listed since 1970, it has been owned by the Council for some years. Now the Victorian Society hopes it could make an unconventional home for an architecture enthusiast or a base for an organisation which could use and cherish the building as it deserves.
‘The Castle Club has great potential,’ said Heloise Brown, Conservation Adviser of the Victorian Society. ‘It is an impressive building by a notable Victorian architect. In the right hands, it could be a real asset but, as with all historic buildings, it needs understanding and care if it is to survive long-term. We hope a sympathetic buyer comes forward, so that the future of the Castle Club can be assured for many years to come.’
