Buerton's historic school seeks a sympathetic owner

7 December 2007

News that a much-loved school building in the Cheshire village of Buerton has been put up for sale has been welcomed by the Victorian Society, the national charity campaigning for the Victorian and Edwardian historic environment.

Local people fought hard to keep the mid-Victorian school, which was built with donations from the village community, in use. Yet, despite representations from the Women’s Institute, the parents and the parish council, the school was closed a year ago, leaving Buerton without an educational building for the first time in over 130 years. Since then, the school has stood empty with no future use agreed. The Victorian Society now hopes that a sympathetic buyer will come forward so that the building which has contributed so much to the local area in the past can remain as a local landmark for many years to come.

‘We were saddened to hear of Buerton School’s closure,’ said Alex Baldwin, Conservation Adviser of the Victorian Society. ‘If the school can no longer be kept open, we want to see a sympathetic use that will respect the character of this building which has stood at the heart of its community for so many years.’

She continued: ‘We have seen in the past how versatile and durable historic school buildings can be and how much they contribute to local people’s memories and sense of place. With a little imagination, there is no reason why Buerton’s school building can’t be used and enjoyed for many years to come. We hope it gets that chance.’
