Experts drink to Birmingham's heritage

This month the Birmingham Group of the Victorian Society is encouraging people to rediscover the city's historic pubs by taking part in a pub crawl around some of Birmingham's most significant watering holes.

The Crawl to Save Our Pubs was launched on Thursday 30 August when campaigners from the Victorian Society and the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) visited five of Birmingham’s most fascinating historic pubs. Led by Dr Geoff Brandwood, author of Licensed to Sell: the history and heritage of the public house, they stopped for a drink at the Market Tavern on Moseley Street, the White Swan, the Anchor, the Woodman and the Grade II*-listed Barton Arms. They also visited the Bulls Head on Digbeth and were impressed by the sympathetic restoration the management had carried out.

‘It’s great to see landlords and staff who are so proud of their pubs’ history,’ said Tim Bridges, Birmingham and West Midlands Architectural Adviser of the Victorian Society. ‘Thanks to their hard work, these nationally significant buildings are still looked after and open for everyone to enjoy. What better way to look after our heritage than to go out to the pub for a drink?’
