The Victorian Society welcomes a new Chairman

20 August 2007

The Victorian Society, the national charity campaigning for the Victorian and Edwardian historic environment, is pleased to announce the installation of its new Chairman, Dr Colin Cunningham, who was formally elected to the role last week.

A former Chairman of the Society of Architectural Historians, Dr Cunningham was Reader in Architectural History and a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the Open University, for which he presented various television programmes. Among his numerous publications are Victorian & Edwardian Town Halls (Routledge, 1981), Building for the Victorians (Cambridge University Press, 1985) and Alfred Waterhouse 1830-1905: Biography of a Practice (Oxford University Press, 1992), for which he was jointly awarded the Alice Davis Hitchcock medallion. He replaces Dr Geoff Brandwood who steps down after six years as the Society’s Chairman.

‘We are delighted to welcome Dr Cunningham,’ said Dr Ian Dungavell, Director of the Victorian Society. ‘He will be a great person to lead us into our fiftieth anniversary year. We look forward to working with him as we fight to save the best of the nation’s Victorian and Edwardian heritage for future generations.’
